The RAG Dental AI assistant I have been working on building with a mentor
BrightBite: Mobile Dental Education & Product Recommendation Mobile App
Senior Design and Passion Project
2025 Spring Semester
Problem Statement
During my 11-year career as a dental hygienist, I identified a critical gap in patient education: the disconnect between in-office recommendations and at-home implementation. Patients often struggled to retain complex information delivered during appointments, leading to:
Confusion about recommended products and where to purchase them
Dental anxiety due to uncertainty about procedures
Reliance on unreliable online sources for dental information
Poor follow-through with home care regimens
Solution Approach
BrightBite is a mobile application that bridges this educational gap by providing patients with reliable, accessible information about dental procedures and products. The app serves as an extension of the dental office, allowing patients to review recommendations, learn about procedures, and make informed decisions about their oral health at their own pace.
My Contributions
As the project originator and leader, I've worn multiple hats throughout the development process:
Product Vision & Management: Transformed a personal passion project into a structured senior design initiative, leading a development team while maintaining the core vision
UX Research: Applied my dental expertise to identify key user needs and information gaps based on real patient experiences
UI Design: Created comprehensive user interface designs in Figma, focusing on accessibility and intuitive navigation for users of varying dental knowledge
Content Development: Vetted and curated educational content and product recommendations from reliable sources in the dental field
Technical Implementation: Contributed to development while separately working with a mentor to integrate an advanced RAG chatbot feature for personalized guidance
Current Status & Future Vision
While the senior design project is ongoing and focuses on core functionality, I'm simultaneously developing an expanded version with additional features. The current implementation demonstrates the viability of the concept, while my parallel development explores more advanced capabilities.
This project represents the perfect intersection of my dental expertise and technical skills, allowing me to create technology that addresses a real need I observed throughout my clinical career.
